Volkswagen and The Ipad

In a move that puts the carmaker ahead of the pack in terms of both PR and technology, Volkswagen has developed a digital customer magazine app, especially for the brand new and very hyped up Ipad.  The magazine is published quarterly in five languages and is accessible throughout Europe.  Clever Volkswagen is the first carmaker to jump on this particular bandwagon and the company says the app is an important building block in its digital marketing strategy.  There’s also an internet version of the new digital automotive space planned for the end of June 2010 when it will then also be possible to integrate content in social networking sites such as Facebook.

Range Rover Turns 40

The iconic Range Rover car will pass its 40-year milestone in June this year with the car having been the first ever off road/on road vehicle as well as the first fully capable luxury 4 x 4.    The Classic Range Rover first went on sale back in 1970 with the second-generation vehicle going on sale in 1994 and the current production model appearing in 2001.  The latest version has brought the company higher sales than any previous model and can boast everyone from royalty to rockstars as owners and drivers. Later this year, a new, lighter and smaller member will be added to the Range Rover family, which will increase the portfolio to three model lines.

Electric Mercedes Benz

With electric vehicles set to form an increasing part of Mercedes Benz’s product plan, it’s no surprise that the company is forging ahead with installing charging points around the UK and continuing its smart fortwo electric drive trial.  Designated charging bays have now been set up at seven locations, including Mercedes-Benz World in Surrey and Mercedes-Benz UK in Milton Keynes.  Apparently 72% of the 264 people taking part in the company’s trial have so far said they would be happy to switch from their lead-filled cars to this new electric form of transport.  The company plans to expand the trial later this year to encourage more customers to make the electric switchover.

Two Wheel Drive Land Rover

Back in May, bosses at Land Rover unveiled that the new baby Land Rover – the Qashqai-rivalling small SUV due to go on sale next year – will almost certainly be available as a two wheel drive.  The car doesn’t yet have a name and will also of course feature the four wheel drive option but Land Rover told BBC’s Top Gear that whilst they had initially discounted the idea of a two-wheel-drive, they now concede that – with front-drive variants making up 22 per cent of all SUVs sold in Europe – it would be foolish not to offer the fuel-efficient option.

Jeff Koons’ BMW

As part of BMW’s ‘Art Car’ series, the carmaker unveiled its latest contributor’s offering in the firm of the Jeff Koon Art Car in Paris at the beginning of May.  Jeff Koon is the 17th artist to take part in the Art Car series and his design has been applied to a BMW M3 GT2 racecar that will compete in the 24 Hours of Le Mans from June 12-13. The challenge, according to BMW, was to create a design with light material so that it would not interfere with the car’s aerodynamics and weight.  The colourful design was unveiled at the Pompidou Centre in Paris and already seems to have an advantage over the 16th Art Car in terms of mobility – the last one was encased in ice…
